Waking up with oogy eyes totally exhausted is not my idea of fun.
Two years ago we moved to a rural small town one hour north of where my husband and I were living a bit closer to a few of my relatives.
Short story from the long version, my husband has his own handyman business and my aunt seems to be flipping every house in the town of Staples these days. I might be slightly exaggerating. She’s hired my husband to do most of the work and because I owned my own landscaping/painting company she’s asked me to do that work for her.
I originally stopped doing that work because painting is so toxic and doing it every day for a living was killing me. But, with me not being able to say no, and you might have guessed. I’m painting the interior of her house (the second one in less than two years) as my husband gets done with remodeling it.
Even though I use low VOC paints eliminating a bunch of chemicals, my hair still falls out and my eyes get this oogy crap oozing from them. And, if you’re wondering, yes, I do where a mask designed to filter out the chemicals. Well, most of the time. However, they only work so well, with having to lift it up all the time to talk as my aunt chats with me while I do my work.
I’m going to be bald if I keep this up. To make matters worse we’re working on our own house too.
This is precisely why I do what I do today.. I stopped landscaping and painting to become a certified natural health professional teaching people how to overcome health issues. With not only the body, but also the mind, and spirit the natural way.
Working at my aunts has led to us eating there quite a bit. She likes the company, and we enjoy hers too. So, when she asks us to stay for dinner, not wanting to be rude, we usually do. However, this has led to a lot of meat and potato kind of meals with a lot of breads, and of course deserts. Don’t get me wrong, she’s an excellent cook and it all tastes really good. But it’s all foods we eat little of these days. And we only eat organic, which this is not the case.
Both my husband and I have complained about having gained weight. Mind you, it’s only ten pounds, nothing like the average 33 pounds gained in a year for joe blow public. And we don’t need to go up in clothing size, but still, it’s very uncomfortable.
This morning was the last straw. These oogy eyes and less than exuberant energy needs to go.
I woke up hearing Barbara Mandrell singing I was country (when country wasn’t cool) A sign from the heavens above.
I’m going back to eating the way we had been for the last eleven years since I myself needed to get healthy. I’m finally saying NO to her when she asks if we’ll stay and eat. And my husband even says he’s saying NO to her cakes and cookies that she makes for him. Yah, I’ll have to see that one. He loves his sweets. When I met him he’d go to Walmart and buy $200.00 worth of snacks, cookies and junk food. That stopped however, when I moved in. 🙂 He proceeded to lose 30 pounds or so where people didn’t even recognize him. Just from him not eating junk food. He also wore glasses and had bad knees, both issues have since gone as I’ve implemented healing techniques for him. I was on medication for hypothyroidism and a whole host of other problems which have now gone as well.
Today, the straw that broke the camels back has been that of feeling so sluggish, and not thinking clearly. I just want it to stop.
I’m so amazed at how little time it took to feel this way again. I told my husband we’re going back to what worked to get us healthy in the first place. He smiled and agreed.
I’m going back to eating mainly green smoothies. I’ve been eating them all along, just adding in all the other stuff too, causing me to overeat. That’s why Barbara was in my head. I was making green smoothies before they were cool. Most people would look at me usually in disgust at what I was drinking. But now they’re cool. So I keep them out in the open now with people asking me what’s in mine instead of making a funny face saying ick…Well, they usually still say ick, but more people are drinking them anyways.
Green smoothies are not just for detoxing as many people refer to them. Giving them a bad rap by the way. Nobody wants to eat foods over and over that only detox the body. They’re not just for clearing out all the old foods sitting around in your intestines that haven’t been digested while the excess is oozing out of your stomach lining. Which ends up creating your immune system to work overtime with particulars that shouldn’t be happening. Just a little something to think about if you’re overeating the wrong types of foods. They’re nourishing. Giving you proteins that are already broken down supplied by leafy greens. Enabling it so your body doesn’t have to work so hard digestion them. Along with suppling water and fruits. All good nourishing foods.
Making them from organic grown foods is doubly nourishing. Yum!!
Mind you, I don’t make them using milks, yogurts, and only using spinach (another topic altogether). I make the original green smoothies that are made using only water, greens, and a few fruits all blended keeping the benefits of the fiber. This is not juicing where you end up throwing away one of the main values the body needs–fiber (another topic for later).
My favorite green smoothie is, well there are many.
The one I’m making today however, is made from:
1 Granny Smith apple
1 Pink Lady apple
1 gala apple
1 bosc pear.
Chopped, put in the blender with 2 1/2 cups clean water (not city water)
While blending, I add in a bunch of leaves or at least eight large leaves of the greens I’m choosing for that day. This one happens to made with Dandelion leaves of which I’ll add the whole bunch because the leaves are smaller.
I have the recommended Vita-Mix blender. I refer to it as a blender on steroids. I think it could blend a rock easily. If you don’t have this type, or a high powered blender, but would like to try this recipe you may have to blend in small batches to blend well.
Once I have everything blended I pour all of it into four 16 oz. jars. Why jars? I like to eliminate using as much plastic as I can (another topic for later) and this enables me to take them with me where ever I go. I usually have at least two jars with me at all times in a cooler bag with cold packs to keep them cool.
If you’d like to attempt this, but are concerned with the costs of containers consider recycled jars. These jars come from the Vegenaise I buy. I’m an avid recycler. I’m one of those people that reduces, reuses, recycles almost everything. So I have lots of jars to work with.
Also, if time is of a concern for you, this group only took me a few minutes to prepare. It really only involves washing your fruit and greens and cutting them up.
I usually make at least three different varieties to keep in the fridge, handy with easy access, to keep me energized and properly nourished all day. These are made with organic ingredients which last up to seven day. If you consider doing this but use conventional grown foods they usually only last three or four days before they start to break down. This is not just a morning drink. It’s a lifestyle changing healing drink. 🙂
